UMF® is the registered name and trademark of UMFHA (UMF® Honey Association) and can be used only by licensed users who meet set criteria which includes the monitoring and auditing of honey quality. UMFHA has registered UMF® as a trademark and strictly controls its use to ensure the activity of Manuka Honey is not misrepresented. The UMF® trademark was registered to help consumers ensure that the Manuka Honeys they are buying do in fact have the special antibacterial properties and that those properties are at the level shown on the label. Consumers generally choose UMF® Manuka Honey for its unique flavour and for its health maintaining effects.
To use the UMF® trademark, the manufacturer or owner of the brand must hold a current UMF® license with
UMFHA (UMF® Honey Association). All licensees have their honey processing and packing facilities independently audited each year. In addition an audit is made of each licensees label claims (ie that UMF® 15 is UMF15) by way of an annual check of process and product test records and random in market product testing.
The UMF®grading system appraises markers found in manuka honey, and assures product purity and quality.
